Finding Scholarships For College

If you are in high school and want to continue your education, there is a scholarship program that you can take advantage of. The United States Department of Education has developed an education grant program that provides financial aid for those who want to pursue post-secondary education. You can take advantage of this scholarship program if you plan on attending a post-secondary institution. You will need to submit a scholarship application to the schools you have in mind. There are a number of scholarships available for you.

To participate in the scholarship program you must meet the following requirements: Must be a sophomore in high school; Be a American citizen or eligible non-citizen; Complete the FAFSA application. The requirements of the FAFSA vary by each school so make sure you apply to the schools that apply to you. The Department of Education requires that you complete at least thirty (30) credits of course work that does not count towards major or General Education (unless it is a disability act scholarship program) within your senior year. You may be required to participate in a clinical study or internship as well.

If you are not an American citizen and do not qualify for the scholarships offered, there are some other ways you can get money for college. Grants are offered by local, state and federal agencies. For example, some colleges award tuition assistance based on need. Other grants are awarded based on merit – these are often referred to as “need-based” funding.

Need-based scholarships generally have stricter requirements than merit-based scholarships. For those who qualify for need-based funding, you must be enrolled in a full time high school or a four years degree program. Also, these types of scholarships require that you maintain a minimum grade point average throughout your four years of college.

Another way to obtain funding for your undergraduate degree is to enter into a scholarship program sponsored by a state, a city or a private company. In the case of the United States government, scholarship programs are provided through the Office of Minority Scholarship and Financial Assistance. In Maryland, this assistance is offered through the Office of Special Education Programs. A representative from each participating state will visit your high school during the year to determine if you qualify for one of these programs. There are also merit-based scholarships that are awarded on the basis of academic achievement. Academic scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement. Students with exceptional academic achievement in high school are eligible for these types of scholarships. The awards cover tuition and all other financial needs. Many of these scholarships are awarded to students with exceptional academic achievement, but all students who meet the initial educational achievement requirements are eligible to apply.
